Despite not being close, it cannot be doubted that Albus loved and cared for him dearly, evidenced by the fact that even though he resented having to stay at home, Albus still refused to allow Aberforth to stop his education out of concern of his brother's future.

After his death, Dumbledore's reputation was smeared somewhat by Rita Skeeter, who wrote an insulting biography called The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore. This depicted him in several nasty ways, including suggesting that he delayed his attack on Gellert Grindelwald because he still held lingering affection for him. In 1998, shortly prior to the start of the Battle of Hogwarts, Lord Voldemort attempted to force the whereabouts of the Elder Wand out of its previous owner, the same Gellert Grindelwald. Voldemort feared Dumbledore obviously as the Wizarding World was aware of and Dumbledore acknowledged Voldemort as being the most dangerous Dark Wizard of all time, showing that both still considered the other to be exceptionally powerful and skilled. However, it was apparent that Dumbledore omitted Grindelwald completely as Grindelwald was undoubtedly superior to Voldemort. It could be that Dumbledore considered Voldemort to be simply far more evil as Grindelwald's actions, while heavily flawed and destructive, did have some nobleness in it and Grindelwald also could feel remorse. The death of Ariana, however, permanently altered Albus into a highly selfless and benevolent wizard that was loved and admired by all wizards and witches in the side of the light.
